Finding Crested Butte, Colorado is usually not a problem, there’s only one in the United States. Look in the southwest quadrant of Colorado, about 20 miles south of Aspen.   This Map of the Crested Butte area, provided by Thin Air Web Company, should help you find it.  For a 3D look at the Crested Butte region click the image on the left.

The closest airport is Gunnison, with service from Denver by United Express, in the summer, and by American, Delta, and United Express in the winter. The next choice of airports would be Montrose, about 60 miles west and 3000 feet lower.

For driving times, allow about 30 minutes from Gunnison, 2 hours from Montrose, 3 hours from Grand Junction, 4 hours from Colorado Springs, or 5 hours from the Denver airport.

Like any resort town, Crested Butte has plenty of options for lodging and meals, including the International Hostel, and the Ski History Inn.   For information about all of the possibilities, see the Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce web site.

In addition, camping in the nearby National Forest is a popular option for many students.

Course Sites:  Here is a description of this year's course sites.  If you choose to stay at Irwin Lodge or the International Hostel, please contact them directly for lodging information and reservations.

The Mt. Crested Butte Fire Station (station #2) is a fire and rescue training facility located in the ski resort town of Mt. Crested Butte.  The Fire Station is located in Mt. Crested Butte on the left-hand side of Gothic Ave approximately 1/4 mile past the entrance to the ski area  (You will drive past the Sheraton hotel and Treasury Ave. as you continue up the hill).  Parking and the entrance to the classroom are in the rear of the building.  For a map of Mt. Crested Butte click here.

Lodging

The Crested Butte International Hostel is a modern facility on the edge of downtown Crested Butte. Their large common room will serve as our classroom most mornings, with afternoons spent in the surrounding national forest. The hostel offers inexpensive accommodations on site, with a Laundromat next door. It is within five minutes walk of the Elk Avenue restaurants, bars, and shops. Please contact the Crested Butte International Hostel directly for lodging information and reservations.

The Ski History Inn is a new bed and breakfast located in Mt. Crested Butte 300 feet from the lifts.  Because CB Outdoors holds classes during non-peak times, inexpensive lodging rates are offered. In addition, it is only 5 minutes from the Fire Station #2  where many classes are held. Please contact The Ski History Inn directly for lodging information and reservations and tell them you are attending a CB Outdoors class.

Camping is available at the National Forest Service Irwin Lake Campground, approximately one mile by dirt road from the Lodge. Roads in the area can be rough, but are usually easily negotiated by two wheel drive vehicles.
