Susan Purvis, owner of Crested Butte Outdoors International teaches wilderness medicine as a lead instructor for Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA).

Susan Purvisís love for adventure and education has taken her to the hottest, coldest, and highest places on earth: Ethiopia, Antarctica, and Nepal. Susan has taught wildness medicine to everyone from the Secret Service to Sherpa guides in Nepal to some of the most elite search and rescue teams in the world. She has worked for National Geographic Channel, truTV, appeared on the BBC and Discovery Channels showing casing The Hottest Place on Earth. She and been featured in numerous magazines and newspaper articles.

Unrivaled Expertise

Crested Butte Outdoors International in conjunction with WMA is dedicated to the development of remote and practical medicine around the globe. We are medical rescue professionals, researchers, experienced educators, and advocates for healthcare in wilderness contexts. Our curriculum, overseen and continually revised by a committee of medical practitioners and academics, has been taught on all seven continents.

CBO International has trained over 1,000 medically and non-medically trained students around the world. Our participants include colleges and universities, camps, outdoor adventure companies, rural ambulance services, private industry, federal agents, and government entities. CBO International will train the responders and practitioners needed for medical care in low resource settings, anywhere in the world.

Crested Butte Outdoors owner, Susan Purvis has been featured on television, in national magazines and news print for her expertise in wilderness medicine and K-9 avalanche search and rescue missions. 

Susan and her search and rescue dog Tasha, whom she trained to save lives on the most avalanche-prone slopes in Colorado, launched dozens of search missions on mountains and in snow and water to rescue the missing or recover the remains of victims of nature and crime.  The duo received Congressional Recognition for their role in avalanche search and rescue.

Wilderness Medicine as a Second Language, the name of Susan Purvis's non profit school gives back in natice guides in Nepal and Africa.
