Wilderness First Responder
(9 Days with one day off)
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) courses
have become the standard of medical training for many outdoor schools,
camps, guide services, and government agencies. The Wilderness
Medical Associates Wilderness First Responder curriculum has proven to be highly adaptable
and well understood by a wide variety of professionals operating
everywhere from the open ocean to the high mountains. Your WMA
certification is readily transferable throughout much of the outdoor
industry.
Wilderness First Responder courses run at least 72
hours over eight teaching days. Full attendance is required, as
is a passing grade on final tests and skills assessments. You should
expect to be occupied with training all day, every day, including one
night rescue simulation. Our training is intense and comprehensive, but
the schedule does include one day off in the middle to allow for a
little rest, local exploration, and just to let your brain catch up on
all of the information.
At least half of your class time will be
outdoors. Please bring the appropriate clothing and equipment for
the season. Although we supply most of your training equipment, we
encourage you to bring the type of gear and supplies that you would
normally have with you in the back country. A major focus of the
Wilderness First Responder
course will be learning to improvise from
what you carry.
Although some of our students have previous medical experience,
there is no training pre-requisite for the Wilderness First Responder
course. Just bring a willingness to learn, a lot of energy, and a love
for the outdoors. For full certification, you must be able to meet the functional
position description for emergency care providers, and be at
least 16 years of age (16 and 17 year old students will require a letter
of consent from parents).
|
Prerequisite
Students must be at least 16 years of age to participate in this
course (16 and 17 year olds must have proof of parental consent).
Certifications Available
All students who successfully complete the Wilderness First
Responder course will receive a
certification card from Wilderness Medical Associates. Certification
remains valid for three years. Within three years, graduates may
recertify by way of a two day course. BLS-CPR certification is
also included. There are many different levels of CPR; Wilderness
First Responders must
maintain a BLS-CPR certification.
Wilderness Medical Associates'
Wilderness First Responder
course meets or exceeds all requirements in the National First
Responder curriculum. Requirements for certification vary from state
to state, so students who successfully complete our course may be
eligible for certification in their home state. Contact your state's
Emergency Medical Services Office for information.
Credentials
Wilderness First Responder courses developed by Wilderness Medical
Associates are widely considered the
most complete medical training for outdoor professionals. Our
courses are preferred by such organizations as Outward Bound, The
National Park Service, The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, many colleges
and universities, and the FBI. As Canoe Magazine stated,
"Wilderness Medical Associates has become the de facto standard
in wilderness medical training."

Wilderness EMT:
Wilderness and Rescue Medicine
/
Wilderness Emergency
Medical Technician Upgrade (WEMT)
6 Days
The Wilderness WEMT Upgrade course
(Wilderness and Rescue Medicine) is a six day
course designed for currently certified EMT’s, Paramedics, PA's, RN's
and MD's who want
to enhance their skills for use on search and rescue teams, or in other
remote and challenging environments. The curriculum builds on your EMS
training and experience to meet the special challenges of the wilderness
setting. Like all of our courses, the emphasis is on the understanding
and application of medical principles and concepts, rather than the
memorization of procedures and algorithms.
Because you already have the emergency medical background, most of
your training will be devoted to long-term medical care, search and
rescue operations, and the leadership role in managing wilderness
emergencies. You will be challenged to improvise and adapt, not just
carry your ambulance into the back country. You already know what a
traction splint is, now can you make one out of your backpack and ski
poles? A dislocated shoulder is no problem on a ten-minute ride to the
hospital, but what if your transport time includes a technical lower
followed by a three hour carry-out?
As an expedition or SAR medic, you will be asked to take care of
problems well beyond the scope of street EMS. Skin infections, diarrhea,
belly pain, rashes, and tendonitis are as much a part of wilderness
medicine as acute trauma. The Backcountry Medicine section of this
course offers new and interesting territory for even experienced EMS
providers. You will also be trained and certified in Wilderness
Protocols including; the reduction of dislocations, wound care, spine
evaluation, and the immediate treatment of anaphylaxis and acute asthma.
No course can fully prepare any Wilderness EMT for every medical
emergency, or the extremes of weather and terrain he or she might have
to deal with. And, real experience can be hard to come by; it wouldn’t
be wilderness if there were hundreds of patients for you to practice on.
But, with the WEMT course, we strive to get as close as we can.
Note: This course serves as an EMT refresher in the State of
Colorado. Please check with your state EMS office for reciprocity. State
testing and re-certification is optional at a small additional expense.
|
Prerequisite
The prerequisite for certification at the Wilderness EMT level is a
current EMT certification (either basic or paramedic). PA's, RN's
and MD's may also participate in the course for a Wilderness EMT
Audit card. Others with medical backgrounds (eg. military medics,
Wilderness First Responder grads, EMT's with expired licenses, and foreign pre-hospital
personnel) will be admitted to the course on a case by case basis.
Students must be at least 16 years of age to participate in this
course (16 and 17 year olds must have proof of parental consent).
Certifications Available
All EMTs who successfully complete the WEMT course will receive a
certification card from Wilderness Medical Associates. Non-EMTs who
successfully complete the course will receive a Wilderness EMT Audit
card. Certifications and Audits remain valid for three years. Within
three years, grads may recertify by way of a two day course.
Continuing education credit has been approved by many State and
Regional EMS offices. Students are responsible for obtaining
approval and filing all appropriate paperwork with their local EMS
offices.
Credentials
Wilderness Medical Associates' WEMT course is the most widely
recognized training program of its kind. Our curriculum is preferred
by such organizations as The National Park Service, the FBI, and the
Journal of EMS (JEMS) conference corporation. The Emergency Services
coordinator for The National Park Service reviewed our material and
"approves and applauds the concept as well as the curriculum

Wilderness Advanced First Aid
(WAFA)
(4 Days)
Wilderness Advanced First Aid is an
excellent starting point for backcountry travelers with little or no
medical background. The course covers the essentials of Wilderness
Advanced First Aid including long term care considerations and several WMA
Wilderness Protocols. At least half of the training is hands-on and
outside, with lots of opportunities to practice assessment and treatment
techniques.
The Wilderness Advanced First Aid course satisfies Forest Service
requirements for back country guides in most jurisdictions, and is
recognized by the Coast Guard for the captain’s license first aid
prerequisite. It is recommended for anyone who spends time hiking or
paddling out of the reach of immediate medical care.
The four day Wilderness
Advanced First Aid course can be used to recertify
Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness EMT certificates from WMA,
WMI, NOLS, and SOLO.

Wilderness Advanced Life Support
(5 Days)
Thirty-six hours of Category 1 CME credit is available for
physicians and physician assistants.
|
Wilderness
Advanced Life Support is an intensive four-day course
designed for paramedics, RN’s, PA’s, and physicians whose
professional responsibilities may require the use of advanced
techniques in the backcountry setting. We focus on the procedures
and technologies that are the most appropriate for extreme
environments and the extended-care context. Significant time is also
devoted to the general principles of wilderness medicine, and
hands-on training in both basic and ALS techniques in backcountry
rescue. For the experienced practitioner, this course will serve as
a well-rounded exposure to the realities and challenges of providing
advanced care in a difficult environment. It is especially valuable
for medical advisors and medical team leaders for SAR teams,
wilderness outfitters, and outdoor education organizations.
This course will
include the core concepts of wilderness medicine such as
long-term patient care, environmental emergencies, backcountry
medicine, and exercises in improvised treatments and equipment.
Topics cover: Personal preparation, patient assessment, ALS
equipment in the backcountry, trauma management, musculoskeletal
injuries, toxins, anaphylaxis, thermoregulation, altitude, drowning,
lightning, spine injury assessment and treatment, improvised splints
and stretchers, basic and advanced medical and rescue kits, wound
care, litter packaging, and more. |
Participants
should expect to spend a significant amount of time outdoors and
be prepared to deal with mountain weather. It will most likely be
dry and beautiful, but it can also snow and rain. While you can be
sure that Wilderness Advanced Life Support will be intense
and interesting, it will not be dangerous or overly strenuous.
Technical rock and rescue skills are not required. Anyone with some
hiking and camping experience will do fine with the outdoor portions
of this course. Please bring sturdy footwear and the appropriate
outdoor clothing.
The WALS program is
relatively new, and we plan to keep it that way. There are no plans
for this course to become a “canned” certification. WALS is where
the most seasoned WMA instructors are encouraged to discuss new and
sometimes controversial material, perspectives, and techniques.
Students are encouraged to contribute their knowledge and experience
to instructors and colleagues. As a result, this course has more the
information and idea-sharing flavor of a conference than a packaged
program. We have drawn on the experience of dozens of seasoned
practitioners, and solicited the latest in equipment and technology
from suppliers. You can look forward to a fun and stimulating four
days.
CME: Thirty-six
hours of Category I CME credit are available for physicians and
physician assistants.
Prerequisites:
Current certification/licensure as an EMT-I, Paramedic, RN, NP, PA,
MD, or DO. Other medical providers will be considered on a
case-by-case basis. |
